We are excited to invite Anicia Manassa to the Nonprofit Sistas podcast. In this episode, we will discuss whether is it better to train more sign language interpreters.
A Passion For Sign Language
With over 8 years of experience under her belt, Anicia has worked as a Sign Language Interpreter. She has been awarded the opportunity to offer American Sign Language and English Interpretation workshops to individuals in private and corporate settings.
Her passion stems from her desire to remove any communication barriers for all individuals. Anicia pays attention to how the world is playing its part in doing so with the help of a sign language interpreter.
She has seen various representations of interpreters via the NFL, concerts, and large global events or festivals. Anicia intends to maintain professionalism while providing Interpreting services, thus her reasons why for being heavily involved in this community.
Creating More Interpreters of Color
With the lack of representation in the ASL interpreter world, Anicia has deemed it important for people of color to learn this language.
This spearheaded her journey to starting a nonprofit organization. Secure Interpreting Solutions (S.I.S) exists to equip people who are interested in learning the American Sign Language.
Empowering interpreters of color to achieve their goals confidently, despite the limitations others have set for them. Henceforth, Anicia’s ultimate goal is to educate others on how to create a more equitable field in Sign Language Interpreting by removing racial boundaries.
In this episode, we will discuss the following:
- Reflecting on the representation of sign language interpreters
- Is it better to train more sign language interpreters to help others communicate
- The feeling of being the only person of color in a niche area or industry
