We are excited to invite Margaret Cowan to the Nonprofit Sistas podcast. In this episode, we will highlight the common beliefs about single mothers.
The Purpose of I Am My Sister’s Keeper
Margaret is the Founder of I Am My Sister’s Keeper (IAMSK). She is the single mother of three amazing young ladies. Other the years, her experience with motherhood gave her an immense outlook on what it takes to raise children on her own.
Through trial and error, Margaret recognized the importance of community as a single mom. This realization gave her the vision to start a nonprofit organization. Margaret wanted to give mothers a village that helped to gather other mothers in the local community who they could relate to, live alongside, and support.
It is her goal to use her gifts and abilities, along with lifelong lessons, to own a neighborhood full of homes to provide for single mothers in need of housing. With the support of I Am My Sister’s Keeper, Margaret is working to break the common stereotypes about single mothers.
How can the community help single moms?
Within the local communities of Memphis, Margaret is leading the charge to achieve the organization’s long-term goals. These goals include: helping single moms become financially secure, obtain safe and affordable housing, advance professionally, obtain dependable childcare, and enroll in a college or university.
